Who was Don Martin Miguel de Guemes?

Don Martín Miguel de Güemes was an Argentine general and a key figure during the South American Wars of Liberation. He was born on February 8, 1785 into a wealthy family. At 23, Guemes joined the Spanish army and defended Buenos Aires from the British. After the May Revolution of 1810, he joined the army sent to fight the Spaniards in Upper Peru and won the Battle of Suipach.

Guemes took command of the partisan detachment of gaucho “Los Gauchos de Güemes”. Their mission was to defend northwestern Argentina from Spanish invasions from royalist Peru. His success in repelling Spanish attacks helped the nascent revolutionary government establish itself in Buenos Aires. It also gave General José de San Martín time to assemble his “Army of the Andes”. He led her through the mountains to win decisive victories in Chile and Peru.

Who is Manuel Belgrano?

General Manuel Belgrano was an Argentine economist, lawyer, journalist, politician and military leader. He was one of the main leaders of the Argentine War of Independence. Belgrano was born June 3, 1770 in Buenos Aires and died June 20, 1820.

He is best known for designing the flag of Argentina. He raised the flag for the first time in Rosario on February 27, 1812, during the Argentine War of Independence.

San Martin’s most notable contribution to the South American independence movement included his leadership of the Andes crossing in 1817. His daring maneuver led to a decisive victory over royalist forces at the Battle of Chacabuco and the liberation of Chile. He also organized the Peruvian War of Independence and declared the independence of Peru in 1821.
