April 2024
April 1 (Monday) 2024 – National Holiday of Cyprus / EOKA Day (public holiday).
EOKA Day commemorates the beginning of the Cypriot struggle against British rule in 1955. On April 1 of that year, the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (EOKA) launched an armed campaign aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece and ending British colonial rule over the island.
EOKA, led by General George Grivas, used guerrilla tactics, bombings and assassinations to undermine British control of Cyprus. Although these militant methods were controversial, EOKA was eventually able to end British rule in 1960 when Cyprus gained independence.

Ochi Day commemorates the rejection of the Fascist Italian ultimatum to Greece in 1940, demanding that Greece allow Axis forces to enter and occupy strategic sites. The Greek Prime Minister responded with a simple word “ochi”, which means “no”, and refused to give up. This act of defiance inspired the Greek people and Allied forces to resist the Axis powers.
