Holidays in New Zealand 2024 – you need to know!
We have divided all holidays in New Zealand in 2024 into four categories:
- Public holidays.
- Local holidays.
- Days for celebrating local holidays.
- Unofficial holidays.
Public holidays are celebrated throughout the country. These days, most New Zealanders have an official day off from work. There are 11 public holidays throughout the year. On three such days there is a trading restriction. Day trading is prohibited on Easter Friday and Christmas Day. Trading is prohibited until 1pm on ANZAC Day. Only work:
- Gas stations.
- Pharmacies.
- Shops selling dairy products.
- Restaurants and cafes.
- Shops at airports and train stations.
Local holidays are designated by the provinces. They are equivalent to public holidays, but there is a significant difference. The date of celebration of a local holiday differs from its actual date. Usually it shifts to Monday or Friday. Sometimes these dates coincide, and sometimes they are separated by several weeks. For example, consider the holidays in New Zealand 2024:
- Northland, Auckland and Wellington’s Jubilee Days are celebrated on their actual date as it falls on Monday 29 January 2024.
- Taranaki’s Jubilee Day is celebrated on March 11, 2024, when it actually falls on March 31, 2024.
Unofficial holidays are significant dates that are not established by law. They are religious, international or traditional in nature. Events or celebrations may be held on these days, but employees do not have reduced hours or vacation. In this publication, we have listed only the most significant unofficial holidays in New Zealand in 2024.

What does the Battle of Gallipoli symbolize?
The Battle of Gallipoli was a disastrous World War I campaign fought in 1915–16 between the Allied forces and the Ottoman Empire. It took place on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. Britain and France launched a naval attack, followed by an amphibious landing of British, French, Australian and New Zealand troops. Their goal was to bring the Ottomans out of the war and open a sea route to Russia.
The attack failed due to fierce Ottoman resistance, poor Allied leadership, difficult terrain, and lack of resources. Both sides suffered horrific losses in eight months of stalemate trench warfare before the Allies began to retreat. Although the campaign was not successful, it was of great importance to Australia and New Zealand.
