Features of the 2024-2025 school calendar in Finland
Finland does not have a common school calendar. The country stretches 1,157 km from north to south, so weather conditions vary from region to region. The climate is also greatly influenced by the terrain – the highest point is 1,323.6 meters above sea level.
The country’s territory is divided into 19 provinces (before 2011 there were 20). Each provincial capital has its own school year schedule. There is no official general school vacation schedule. However, most cities and towns in a province follow the capital.
The only thing they have in common is the number and name of the holiday periods. Their start and end dates are approved one year in advance and are published on the official website of the Ministry of Education. Here are the school holidays in Finland 2024/25:
- Autumn vacation.
- Christmas Holidays.
- The winter vacation.
- Summer holidays.
IMPORTANT! As a rule, in large cities, individual schools do not deviate from the general schedule of the school year. The shift in school holiday dates often occurs in small towns. This is usually due to climate features, less often – to local traditions, holidays or special events.
The school holidays in Finland 2024-2025 are subject to current legislation. When planning them, schools and cities must adhere to general rules:
- There must be a minimum of 190 school days in an academic year.
- Independence Day, Epiphany, and Labor Day are considered school days but are not.
- Officially, the school year begins on August 1, but in fact it happens 1-2 weeks later.
- The last day of school must fall on the last working day of the 22nd week of the year.
In addition to the holiday periods, schoolchildren in Finland have public holidays. There will be 11 such days during the 2024/25 school year. At the end of the article, we will provide a list of them with exact dates and brief explanations.
