Changes in the school schedule in Israel in 2023-2024

In August 2022, the Ministry of Education signed an agreement with the Union of Teachers. According to this document, the schedule of school holidays and days of rest in Israeli schools is being changed. Now Isru Chag, Lag B’Omer and Fast Esther have become regular school days. Instead, they introduced a long vacation, combining Yom Kippur and Sukkot.

IMPORTANT! The Ministry of Education may amend the new school year schedule. School holidays in Israel 2023-2024 may be shifted, shortened or lengthened. We recommend checking the schedule with your school in August.

Below are the holidays in Israel for schoolchildren in 2023-2024. All dates indicated are included in the holiday period. There are no classes on these days.

Holidays and memorable dates for all schoolchildren in Israel 2023-2024

School holidays for children in Israel are not the only time of rest. For holidays and memorable dates, schoolchildren have additional shortened and free days from school. Below is a list of such holidays on which, regardless of the type of school and the religion of the student, schoolchildren have no classes.

  • Rosh Hashan – from 15 to 17 September 2023;
  • Purim – March 24 and 25, 2024;
  • Day of Remembrance for the fallen soldiers of Israel and victims of terror * – May 13, 2024;
  • Independence Day – May 14, 2024;
  • Lag B’Omer ** – May 26, 2024;
  • Jerusalem Day – June 5, 2024;
  • Shavuot – June 11 and 12, 2024.

* Shortened day. Lessons end at 12 noon.

** Check if Lag B’Omer will be a school day at your school.

School-free days for students of different faiths in 2023-2024

In Israel, people of different faiths are loyal. Therefore, schoolchildren and teachers can count on additional days off dedicated to religious holidays. There are separate free time schedules for these religious groups:

  1. Catholics, Latins, Angels and Maronites;
  2. Greeks, Orthodox and Armenians;
  3. Muslims;
  4. Druze.

Catholics, Latins, Angels and Maronites

  • Feast of the Cross (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) – September 27, 2023;
  • Christmas – December 24-26, 2023;
  • The beginning of the year is January 1, 2024;
  • Revelation (Epiphany, Epiphany, Day of the Three Kings) – January 6, 2024;
  • Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin – March 25, 2024;
  • Palm Sunday – March 24, 2024;
  • Khamis al-Asrar (Thursday of the Dead) – March 28, 2024;
  • Good Friday – March 29, 2024;
  • Bright Saturday – March 30, 2024;
  • Easter (3 days) – from March 31 to April 2, 2024;
  • Ascension – May 9, 2024;
  • Pentecost (two days) – May 18 and 19, 2024.

Greeks, Orthodox and Armenians

  • Feast of the Cross (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) – September 27, 2023;
  • Christmas – January 6-8, 2024, for Armenians from January 18 to 20, 2024;
  • The beginning of the year is January 14, 2024;
  • Revelation (Epiphany, Theophany, Day of the Three Kings) – January 19, 2024;
  • Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos – April 7, 2024, for Armenians April 20, 2024;
  • Palm Sunday – April 28, 2024;
  • Khamis al-Asrar Day (Thursday of the Dead) – May 2, 2024;
  • Good Friday – May 3, 2024;
  • Bright Saturday – May 4, 2024;
  • Easter (3 days) – from May 5 to May 7, 2024;
  • Ascension – June 13, 2024;
  • Pentecost (two days) – June 23, 2024.

Muslims

At the time of writing, the exact dates for extra days off for Muslim students in Israel have not been determined. We give only the length of the rest period and the holiday to which it is timed. Check dates with your school.

  • Prophet Mohammed’s birthday – One day;
  • Eid al-Fitr (feast of breaking the fast) – Three days;
  • Eid al-Adha (Rabban holiday) – Four days;
  • First Muharram (Rosh Hashanah Hijri) – One day.

Druze

  • Day of the Prophet Zvulun (Sabalan) – September 10, 2023;
  • Feast of the Prophet Elijah – January 25, 2024;
  • Feast of the Prophet Shoaib (Shuaiba) – April 24-27, 2024;
  • Eid al-Adha – from 15 to 19 June 2024.
