When will schoolchildren have vacations in 2024-2025?
During the school year 2024-2025, children in the Netherlands will have the following school holidays:
- Summer holidays 2024.
- Autumn holidays 2024.
- Christmas holidays 2024-2025.
- Spring break 2025.
- May holidays 2025.
- Summer holidays 2025.
Some educational institutions (especially in the Southern region) introduce additional days off for Carnival. They may be called carnival school holidays, but they are not regulated by the central government.
Apart from school holidays, students are excused from classes on most official holidays. There will be 11 public holidays throughout the 2024/25 school year. Some of them fall during school holidays, but we will still list them:
- December 25, 2024 (Wednesday) is the first day of Christmas.
- December 26, 2024 (Thursday) is the second day of Christmas.
- January 1, 2025 (Wednesday) – New Year.
- April 21, 2025 (Monday) – the second day of Easter (Easter Monday).
- April 27, 2025 (Sunday) – King’s Day (optional).
- May 5, 2025 (Monday) – Liberation Day (optional).
- May 29, 2025 (Thursday) – Ascension.
- June 9, 2025 (Monday) – Monday of Pentecost.
IMPORTANT! The school itself decides whether classes will be held on King’s Day and Emancipation Day. Check this information with the administration of the educational institution or on the official website. If King’s Day is declared a non-school day, the school will be closed on Saturday 26 April 2025 (the holiday is moved from Sunday to Saturday)!
School holidays in the Netherlands 2024-2025 (Nordic region)
Below are the school holidays 2024-2025 in the Nordic region of the Netherlands.

- Autumn holidays: from October 26 (Saturday) to November 3 (Sunday) 2024.

Division into regions
The territory of the Netherlands is divided into three regions: North, Central and South. Each region has its own school schedule for the school year. The start and end dates for the 2024-2025 school holidays in the Netherlands differ by one or two weeks. Each region includes, in whole or in part, individual provinces and communities. Below we list which administrative divisions are included in the Northern, Central and Southern regions.
Northern region
- Complete provinces: Drenthe, Friesland, Groningen, North Holland, Overijssel.
- Province of Flevoland (all municipalities except Zeewolde).
- The municipality of Hattem in the province of Gelderland.
- Province of Utrecht (only Emnes and the former municipality of Abcoude).
Central region
- Municipality of Zeewolde in the province of Flevoland.
- Municipalities in the province of Gelderland: Aalten, Apeldoorn, Barneveld, Berkelland, Bronkhorst, Brummen, Büren, Culemborg, Doetinchem, Ede, Elburg, Epe, Ermelo, Harderwijk, Heerde, Lochem, Monferland (except for the territory that belonged to the municipality of Didam), Neder- Betuwe (except for the area of the former municipality of Dodewaard), Nijkerk, Nunspeet, Oldebroek, Ost-Gelre, Oude IJsselstrijk, Putten, Scherpenzell, Thiel, Vorst, Wageningen, West Betuwe, Winterswijk and Zutphen.
- Municipality of Altena in the province of North Brabant (except for the cities of Hank and Dussen).
- Province of Utrecht (all municipalities except Emnes and the former municipality of Abcoude).
- Entire province of South Holland.
South Region
- Provinces in full: Limburg, Zealand.
- Municipalities of the province of Gelderland: Arnhem, Berg en Dal, Beuningen, Doesburg, Druten, Duiven, Heumen, Neder-Betuwe (territory of the former municipality of Dodewaard), Lingevaard, Maasdriel, Montferland (territory of the former municipality of Didam), Nijmegen, Overbetuwe, Renkum, Rehden, Roosendaal, Rijnvaarden, Westervoort, West Maas and Waal, Weichen, Zaltbommel and Zevenaar.
- Province of North Brabant (all municipalities except Woudrichem and the centers of Sleuwijk, Nieuwendijk and Werkendam in the municipality of Altena).
Additional time off for students in 2024-2025
Some schools provide this for students on religious holidays. This practice applies to all students without exception. For example: if the school administration decides to take a day off on Good Friday, then children of any religion, not just Christians, are exempt from classes. Typically, schools are closed on the following holidays:
In exceptional cases, the school may exempt one or more students from classes. Time off is given when the student is required to perform any duties according to his or her religion or belief. For example: attend a mass, participate in a ritual, participate in a solemn event. To receive an exemption from classes, a student must submit a request to the administration of the educational institution.
