Characteristic features of school education in Portugal
Portugal has a rather complex school education structure. It is divided into two parts – primary (grades 1-9) and secondary (grades 10-12) education. In turn, primary education is divided into three cycles:
First cycle – grades 1-4.
The second cycle is grades 5-6.
Third cycle – grades 7-9.
There are two types of schools in Portugal – public and private special education institutions. The latter are run by cooperatives or parent associations. They enter into an agreement with the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation.
IMPORTANT! There is no fixed start date for the school year. Each school has a five-day period during which the school year begins. Check with your school for the start date.
Schools can study according to two systems – half-year (semester) or quarterly (trimester). Below are the school holidays in Portugal 2024-2025 for schools with a quarterly education system. They are approved by Order No. 8368/2024 of the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation. Educational institutions where education takes place according to the semester system can have their own school year schedule.
In addition to regular school holidays, schools are closed on public holidays. You will find a list of such days for the 2024-2025 school year at the end of the article. Schools can also postpone up to two school days each term.

Summer holidays 2024 (preschool cycle, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of school) – from June 29, 2024 (Saturday) to September 12-16, 2024 (Thursday-Monday).
Summer holidays 2024 (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 10th grades of school) – from June 15, 2024 (Saturday) to September 12-16, 2024 (Thursday-Monday).
Summer holidays 2024 (9th, 11th and 12th grades of school) – from June 5, 2024 (Wednesday) to September 12-16, 2024 (Thursday-Monday).
Christmas holidays – from December 18, 2024 (Wednesday) to January 3, 2025 (Friday).
Carnival holidays – from March 3, 2025 (Monday) to March 5, 2025 (Wednesday).
Easter holidays – from 7 April 2025 (Monday) to 21 April 2025 (Monday).
Summer holidays 2025 (preschool cycle, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of school) – from June 28, 2025 (Saturday) to September 11-15, 2025 (Thursday-Monday).
Summer holidays 2025 (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 10th grades of school) – from June 14, 2025 (Saturday) to September 11-15, 2025 (Thursday-Monday).
Summer holidays 2025 (9th, 11th and 12th grades of school) – from June 7, 2025 (Saturday) to September 11-15, 2025 (Thursday-Monday).
School holidays in Portugal 2024-2025 (private special educational institutions)
Below are listed the school holidays in Portugal 2023-2024 in private special educational institutions that have an agreement with the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation.
The first day of school is September 2-6, 2024 (Monday-Friday).
Christmas holidays – from December 23, 2024 (Monday) to December 27, 2024 (Friday).
Carnival holidays – from March 3, 2025 (Monday) to March 5, 2025 (Wednesday).
Easter holidays – from April 17, 2025 (Thursday) to April 24, 2025 (Thursday).
The last day of school is June 27, 2025 (Friday).
Public holidays in Portugal in the 2024-2025 school year
Below are all Portuguese public holidays that fall during the 2024-2025 school year. Some of them fall on Sundays or school holidays, but we have not excluded them from the list.
