Basic and secondary education in Serbia
There are two types of schools in the Republic of Serbia: basic and secondary. Basic education consists of eight classes, after which students take a final exam. After that, they can get a secondary education. Middle schools are divided into:
- 4-year gymnasiums (comprehensive schools).
- 3-year secondary vocational schools.
- 4-year secondary vocational schools.
- Schools for students with special abilities.
The school holiday schedule for all grades except the senior class is the same. It is determined by the Ministry of Education and approved by the Prime Minister. In the final class of primary and secondary schools, a final exam is held. The date of its holding is determined by the provisions of the school calendar.

Below are the dates of school holidays 2023/2024 in Serbian schools according to Prime Ministerial Decree 01 No. 035-00-9/2023 of 30 May 2023.

Here is the schedule of school holidays in basic schools in accordance with the Regulations on the calendar of educational work of elementary schools for the 2023/2024 academic year .
- Summer holidays for students in grades 1-7: Wednesday 21 June to Friday 30 August to Thursday 31 August 2023.
- Summer break for eighth grade students: Wednesday 7 June to Thursday 31 August 2023.
- Autumn break: from Wednesday 8 November to Friday 10 November 2023.
- Winter holidays: from Wednesday 3 January to Friday 19 January 2024.
- Spring Break: Monday 29 April to Monday 6 May 2024.
- Summer holidays for students in grades 1-7: from Monday 17 June to Friday 30 August 2024.
- Summer holidays for students in the eighth grade: from June 18-20 (from the day after the last exam) to Friday August 30, 2024.
IMPORTANT! Eighth grade students take their final exams on Monday 17th, Tuesday 18th or Wednesday 19th June 2024. Be sure to check the dates with your school.

Below is the schedule of school holidays for secondary schools in Serbia according to the Regulations on the educational calendar of secondary schools for the 2023/2024 academic year .
- Autumn break: from Wednesday 8 November to Friday 10 November 2023.
- Winter break: Monday 1 January to Friday 19 January 2024.
- Spring Break: Monday 29 April to Monday 6 May 2024.
- Summer holidays for students in all grades except the last: from Monday 24 June to Friday 30 August 2024.
- Summer holidays for senior classes: from the day after the last exam to Friday 30 August 2024.
IMPORTANT! The dates of the final exams are determined by schools in accordance with their curriculum. As a rule, they are held at the end of May. Be sure to check the exact dates of final exams at your school.
Additional public holidays 2023-2024
Serbian schoolchildren in 2023-2024 will have additional days off for public holidays. Below is a list of public holidays in Serbia that fall during this academic year:
- October 21, 2023: Day of Remembrance for Serbian Victims of World War II.
- January 27, 2024: Saint Sava.
- April 22, 2024: Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, genocide and other victims of fascism in World War II.
- May 9, 2024: Victory Day.
- June 28, 2024: Vidovdan – Commemoration of the Battle of Kosovo on June 15, 1389.
Free days for representatives of different faiths
Orthodox: the first day of the Baptism of the Lord.
Muslims: the first day of Ramadan Bayram (Wednesday, April 10, 2024), the first day of Eid al-Adha (Saturday, June 16, 2024).
Jews: the first day of Yom Kippur, Monday 25 September 2023.
Members of religious communities who celebrate religious holidays according to the Gregorian calendar: Christmas (Monday, December 25, 2023), Easter (from Friday, May 3 to Monday, May 6, 2024).
Members of religious communities who celebrate religious holidays according to the Julian calendar: Christmas (Sunday, January 7, 2024), Easter (from Friday, March 29 to Monday, April 1, 2024).
