Flag Days
There are special days in Iceland when public institutions are required to raise the national flag. In 2023, the flag raising days are as follows:
January 1 – New Year;
April 7 – Good Friday;
April 9 – Easter;
April 20 – First day of summer;
May 1 – Labor Day;
May 28 – Pentecost;
June 4 – Sailor’s Day;
June 17 – Republic Day;
June 26 – Birthday of the President of Iceland;
December 1 – Sovereignty Day.
The law imposes special requirements for hoisting the flag:
The flag must be flown at half mast on all days except Good Friday;
The flag cannot be raised before 7 am;
If the flag is raised at an open-air meeting, public ceremony, funeral or memorial service, it must be lowered at the end of the event, but no later than midnight. In other cases, the flag must be lowered before sunset.
