Public holidays in Ukraine 2023

Below we have given all the holidays in Ukraine 2023, on which the inhabitants of the country have a non-working day. The actual situation in the occupied territories is unknown.

  • January 1 – New Year;
  • January 7 – Christmas (among believers of the Eastern rite);
  • March 8 – International Women’s Day;
  • April 16 – Easter;
  • April 17 – Easter Monday;
  • May 1 – Labor Day;
  • May 9 – Victory Day;
  • June 4 – Trinity;
  • June 5 – Day off on Trinity (transferred from June 4)
  • June 28 – Constitution Day of Ukraine;
  • July 28 – Statehood Day;
  • August 24 – Independence Day;
  • October 14 – Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine;
  • October 16 – Day off for the Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine (transferred from October 14);
  • December 25 – Christmas (for believers of the Western rite).

IMPORTANT! January 1 and 7 were considered working days due to martial law in connection with the invasion of the Russian Federation. If martial law is extended, April 17, June 5 and October 16, 2023 may become working days.

Below are the unofficial Ukrainian holidays in 2023. Ukrainians traditionally celebrate these holidays, but they are working days.

January

  • January 6 – Christmas Eve (for believers of the Eastern rite);
  • January 14 – Vasily (New Year according to the old style);
  • January 19 – Epiphany (Theophany).

February

  • February 14 – Valentine’s Day;
  • February 20 – 26 – Maslenitsa.

March

  • March 26 – National Guard Day.

April

  • April 7 – Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos;
  • April 26 is the International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster.

May

  • May 8 – Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation;
  • May 14 – Mother’s Day;
  • May 20 – Europe Day;
  • May 24 – Day of Saints Methodius and Cyril, Day of Slavic writing and culture.

The Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation has been celebrated in Ukraine since 2015. It is dedicated to honoring the victims of World War II 1939-1945. There are no celebrations on this day. The slogan of the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation: “1939-1945. Remember. We win. ”, and the symbol is a stylized red poppy.

June

  • June 1 – Children’s Day;
  • June 4 – Trinity;
  • June 18 is Father’s Day.

July

  • July 7 – Ivan Kupala (Midsummer Day).

Ivan Kupala is a traditional Old Slavonic holiday, which, after the introduction of Christianity, was celebrated on the night before Ivan’s day on June 24. Now he is again tied to the solstice. In connection with the introduction of the Gregorian calendar at the state level, the Christian holiday began to fall on the night of July 7, which is much further from the real solstice, which occurs on June 23, 22, or sometimes 21 June.

November

  • November 9 – Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language;
  • November 25 is the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holodomors.

December

  • December 6 – Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
  • December 14 – Day of honoring the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant;
  • December 19 – St. Nicholas Day;
  • December 24 – Christmas Eve (for believers of the Western rite);
  • December 31 – New Year’s Eve.

In Ukraine, on St. Nicholas Day, it is customary to give gifts to children. This tradition is not supported in all areas of the country. Initially, it was observed in the western regions. But it is gradually spreading throughout Ukraine.
