What you need to know about Indonesian holidays 2024

All holidays in Indonesia can be divided into two types – public and unofficial. Unofficial holidays are dedicated to secular or religious events; these include significant dates (for example, Fisherman’s Day or Book Day). On public holidays, all Indonesians have the right to a day off from work and school. There are officially three types of public holidays in Indonesia:

  1. National holidays.
  2. Optional holidays.
  3. Common holiday days.

National holidays are determined annually by the Indonesian central government. This is due to the fact that the dates of holidays are determined according to the lunar, Muslim and Gregorian calendars. Their dates are constantly changing. National holidays are celebrated throughout the country.

Optional holidays are set by the provincial or regional government. They are officially recognized by the central government. Optional holidays are analogous to national public holidays with one difference – they are not celebrated throughout the country.

Common holiday days are special dates set by the Indonesian central government. They are usually associated with major public holidays. On these days, civil servants do not go to work (although there are exceptions). Days of joint rest are counted separately from annual leave and are summed up with it.

Besides holidays, there are “ Significant Days ” in Indonesia. These are dates dedicated to historical events, government organizations, representatives of a certain profession, etc. On significant days there is no shortened or free day from work. On such dates, special informal events are held.
