What are the holidays in New Zealand?

There are two types of public holidays in New Zealand – National Holidays and Anniversaries. National holidays are celebrated at the state level throughout the country. On these dates, residents of New Zealand have a non-working day. They are governed by the Holidays Act 2003.

Anniversaries are celebrated only in the regions to which they belong. In these territories they are equated to national ones. As a rule, on anniversaries, many people have a day off, and educational institutions are closed.

The actual dates of anniversary days are almost always different from the official days of celebration. For example, in 2023 Southland Anniversary Day is celebrated on April 11th. Although the event to which it is dated, occurred on March 25. The dates of these days change every year.

Waitangi Day is a public holiday celebrated in New Zealand to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi on February 6, 1840. The treaty was signed between Maori indigenous chiefs and representatives of the British Crown with the aim of laying the foundation for British settlements and helping bring law and order to New Zealand.

Although the treaty was originally seen as an agreement between two equal partners, many Māori feel that their voice was not heard during the negotiations and that the treaty was not fully respected.
