Holidays in Portugal 2023 – what you need to know

There are 14 official public holidays in Portugal. They are celebrated all over the country. On these dates, all institutions that are usually closed on Sundays (banks, schools, etc.) are closed.

The exception is Carnival (Carnival Tuesday). On this holiday, those who have it spelled out in the contract do not work, or if the employer allows them not to go to work. In most companies, Carnival gives employees a day off.

In addition to public holidays, there are regional ones (do not confuse with municipal ones). They are celebrated in certain cities or autonomous regions. On these days, residents have the right to a day off as if it were a public holiday.

In Portugal, there is another type of official holidays – municipal. Each municipality has designated one day for celebrations. Usually this day is timed to coincide with a significant religious date. There is no official non-working day for residents of the municipality on this day.

Now Portugal is undergoing a reform. At the time of writing, there are 308 municipalities in the country, but this number is subject to change. Therefore, we did not give a list of municipal holidays. Read more about it here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Portugal/Divis%C3%B5es_Administrativas .

The last type of Portuguese holidays are unofficial. They are not regulated by law, but people love them, celebrate and keep traditions. Local authorities and organizations can arrange various events in their honor.
