What holidays are there in Serbia?

Conventionally, all Serbian holidays can be divided into three large groups:

  1. Public holidays with non-working day;
  2. Public holidays and memorable dates with a working day;
  3. Religious holidays for individual religions and confessions.

The holidays in Serbia 2023 below are divided according to the same principle. In addition to them, there are unofficial holidays, but there is no definite list. The holidays listed below are approved by the Law on Public and Other Holidays in the Republic of Serbia.

Public holidays in Serbia 2023 (non-working days)

Below are the Serbian holidays, on which the majority of the country’s population has a non-working day. Employees of companies go to work in agreement with the employer. Also, there is no day off for employees of some government agencies (doctors, police, etc.)

January

  • New Year – January 1, 2023;
  • New Year – January 2, 2023;
  • Day off for the New Year — January 3, 2023 *;
  • Christmas – January 7, 2023.

* Under Serbian law, if a holiday falls on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), it is moved to the next weekday. Since January 1 is Sunday, January 3 (Monday) becomes a day off.

February

  • Serbian Statehood Day – February 15, 2023;
  • Serbian Statehood Day – February 16, 2023.

April

  • Good Friday – April 14, 2023;
  • Holy Saturday – April 15, 2023;
  • Easter Sunday (Orthodox) – April 16, 2023;
  • Easter Monday (Orthodox) – April 17, 2023.

May

  • Labor Day – May 1, 2023;
  • Labor Day is May 2, 2023.

November

  • Armistice Day in World War I – November 11, 2023.

Public Serbian holidays 2023 (working days)

The list below shows public commemorative days and holidays in Serbia 2022-2023 that are not non-working days.

  • Saint Sava – January 27, 2023;
  • Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, genocide and other victims of fascism in World War II – April 22, 2023;
  • Victory Day – May 9, 2023;
  • St. Vitus Day – June 28, 2023;
  • Day of Remembrance for Serbian Victims of World War II – October 21, 2023.

Optional religious holidays

Three religions are generally recognized in the Republic of Serbia: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Representatives of such religious communities are entitled to additional days off for religious holidays. Their dates depend on the beliefs of the communities:

  1. Orthodox – on the first day of Baptism.
  2. Catholics and members of other Christian religious communities – on the first day of Christmas and on the days of the Easter holidays, starting from Good Friday and ending on the second day of Easter, according to their calendar.
  3. Members of the Islamic community – on the first day of Eid al-Fitr and on the first day of Eid al-Fitr,
  4. Members of the Jewish community on the first day of Yom Kippur.
