School year in Belgium – important to know!

Belgium is divided into three regions and three language communities. Their borders do not coincide. The school holidays 2025-2026 in Belgium are set by the governments of the language communities. There are three such structures:

French community.
Flemish Community.
German-speaking community.

The dates of the holiday periods vary in these communities. However, the national public holidays of Belgium are observed everywhere, when schools are closed to children and pupils. The communities also celebrate their own holidays, on which children have no classes. These are:

French Community Day – September 27.
Flemish Community Day is July 11 (falls during the summer holidays).
Day of the German-Speaking Community is November 15.

School holidays in Belgium 2025-2026 in the French Community

IMPORTANT! Some sources may give different dates for summer holidays. This is because the holidays officially start on Monday, but in fact, they start on Saturday. Some sources give dates in the “French format”. That is, the last day of school is considered the first day of school holidays, and the first day of school is considered the last day of school holidays.

Here are the school holidays in Belgium 2025-2026, officially published by the French community. They are also observed by the French schools of Brussels. We provide the dates in the generally accepted format – the first and last days of school holidays are considered to be the days when students do not have classes.

IMPORTANT! Information for those who are receiving a shortened secondary education in the arts, as well as those studying according to the 29-week or 33-week system. Educational institutions independently determine the start and end dates of the summer holidays. The educational portal of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation reports:

Summer vacation for the 2025 academic year should begin between May 31 and July 5, 2025.
Summer vacation for the 2025 academic year must end between September 1 and September 15, 2025.
Summer holidays 2026 are scheduled to begin on dates between May 31 and July 4, 2026.

Christmas holidays are from Monday, December 22, 2025 to Sunday, January 4, 2026.
Crocus holidays (analogous to carnival holidays) – from Monday, February 16, to Sunday, February 22, 2026.
Easter holidays are from Monday, April 6 to Sunday, April 19, 2026.
Summer holidays 2026 – from Wednesday, July 1, 2025 to Monday, August 31, 2026.
