Features of school education in Latvia

The academic year in Latvian schools consists of two semesters. In the middle of each of them there is a one-week vacation. Thus, during the school year, schoolchildren in Latvia have four rest periods:

  • Summer holidays (12-14 weeks).
  • Autumn holidays (one week).
  • Winter holidays (two weeks).
  • Spring break (one week).

The dates of school holidays are prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science, and the government approves them. Students in grades 9 and 12 take exams at the end of the school year. Therefore, the second semester is longer for them by 2 and 3 weeks, respectively. In addition to school holidays, children in Latvia take a break from school on public holidays. A list of such days is given at the end of the article.

What exams are taken in grades 9 and 12 in 2023-2024?

To receive a certificate, 9th grade students must pass three exams. Two of them are compulsory: Latvian language and mathematics. The third exam can be called conditionally compulsory – the student must pass an exam in a foreign language. He can choose one of three languages: German, French or English.

Year 12 students must take five exams. They include three compulsory ones: mathematics, Latvian language and a foreign language (German, French or English). In addition to these, students must pass two additional exams in any subject of their choice. They can choose a foreign language as an additional exam.
