Features of school education in Austria
The school year in Austria is divided into two semesters. The first semester lasts from September to February, the second semester begins in February and ends in June or July. There are also different types of schools in Austria:
- State secondary and higher schools.
- Private secondary and higher schools with public rights.
- Primary schools.
- Special schools.
- Polytechnic schools.
School holiday dates depend on the federal state in which the school is located. There are four options for the school year schedule. In the 2024-2025 school year, schoolchildren will have six compulsory vacation periods:
- Autumn vacation.
- Christmas Holidays.
- Semester break.
- Easter holidays.
- Trinity holidays.
- Summer holidays.
The dates below are observed by all schools listed above, as well as vocational schools. In exceptional cases, the dates of summer, autumn, and Easter holidays may be changed. Changes may affect both an individual school and a specific type of school. Christmas holidays and semester holidays cannot be rescheduled! IMPORTANT! Apart from school holidays, schools are closed on Patron’s Day in each individual state. Additional non-school days are also provided for church members. You will find all these dates at the end of this article.
School holidays in Austria 2024-2025
Listed below are the school holidays in Austria 2024-2025 for all federal states. On the given start and end dates of the holiday periods, schoolchildren do not have classes.
IMPORTANT! The Ministry sets school holidays excluding Sundays. For example: Semester holidays last until Saturday 8 February 2025. As schools are closed on Sunday, classes will not begin until Monday 10 February.
Vienna and Lower Austria
Start and end dates of school holidays in the federal states of Lower Austria and Vienna for the 2024/2025 school year:
- Summer holidays 2024: from June 29, 2024 (Saturday) to September 1, 2024 (Sunday).
- Autumn holidays 2024: from October 28, 2024 (Monday) to October 31, 2024 (Thursday).
- Christmas holidays 2024-2025 (winter holidays 2024-2025): from December 23, 2024 (Monday) to January 6, 2025 (Monday).
- Semester holidays 2025: from February 3, 2025 (Monday) to February 8, 2025 (Saturday).
- Easter holidays 2025: from 12 April 2025 (Saturday) to 21 April 2025 (Monday).
- Trinity 2025 (holidays for Trinity 2025): from April 12, 2025 (Saturday) to April 21, 2025 (Monday).

Additional non-school days in 2024-2025
Apart from school holidays, schools in Austria are closed on public holidays. There are 12 public holidays in the 2024-2025 academic year. Five of them fall during school holidays, so they can be ignored. Here is a list of 8 public holidays (and one additional) in the 2024-2025 school year when schoolchildren do not have classes:
- October 26 (Saturday) 2024 – National Day (Declaration of Neutrality Day).
- November 1 (Friday) 2024 – All Saints’ Day.
- November 2 (Saturday) 2024 – All Souls’ Day (not a public holiday, but schools are closed on this day).
- November 8 (Friday) 2024 – Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
- May 1 (Thursday) 2025 – Labor Day.
- May 29 (Thursday) 2025 – Ascension of Christ.
- June 9 (Monday) 2025 – Spiritual Monday.
- June 19 (Thursday) 2025 – Corpus Christi.
In addition to public holidays, every federal state has a Patron Saint’s Day. These are exclusively local holidays. On Patron Saint’s Day, schools in the respective federal states are closed.
- Salzburg – Tuesday 24 September 2024 (St. Rupert).
- Burgenland – Monday 11 November 2024 (St. Maarten).
- Vienna and Lower Austria – Friday 15 November 2024 (St. Leopold).
- Carinthia, Styria, Tyrol, Vorarlberg – Wednesday 19 March 2025 (St. Joseph).
- Upper Austria – Tuesday 4 May 2025 (St. Florian).
For students belonging to the Old Catholic Church and the Evangelical Methodist Church there is one additional day without classes:.
- Good Friday – Friday April 18, 2025.
For AB and HB Evangelical Church students there are two additional non-school days:
- Reformation Day – Thursday 31 October 2024.
- Good Friday – Friday April 18, 2025.
