Features of the school education system in Lithuania
The academic year in Lithuanian schools is divided into two semesters. During this period, schoolchildren have five vacation periods:
Summer holidays.
Autumn vacation.
Winter holidays (Christmas holidays).
Winter vacation.
Easter holidays (spring break).
School holidays in Lithuania 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 are regulated by Order number V-586 dated April 24, 2023, approved and published by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports. Apart from holidays, Lithuanian schools are closed on public holidays. In the 2023-2024 year there are eight additional days without classes for the holidays. You will find a list of their dates later in the article.
The school year lasts from 170 to 185 school days. It depends on the class in which the child is studying and the type of educational institution:
Students in the fourth grade of the gymnasium: 170 days.
Students in grades 1-4 of a regular school: 175 days.
Students in the third grade of the gymnasium: 180 days.
Students in grades 5-10: 175 days.
School holidays in Lithuania 2023-2024
School holidays in Lithuania in 2023-2024 are listed below. Separately, we have listed the start and end dates of the summer holidays, since there are four options for their duration.
Summer holidays 2023: from to August 31 (Thursday) 2023.
Autumn holidays 2023: from October 30 (Monday) to November 3 (Friday) 2023.
Christmas holidays (winter holidays): from December 27 (Wednesday) 2023 to January 5 (Friday) 2024.
Winter holidays: from 19 (Monday) to 23 (Friday) February 2024.
Spring break (Easter break): from 2 (Tuesday) to 5 (Friday) April 2024.
Summer holidays 2024
Start and end dates of summer school holidays in Lithuania 2024 depending on the educational institution and year of study:
For students in grades 1-4: from June 10 (Monday) to August 31 (Saturday) 2024.
For students of grades 5-10 and grades I-II of the gymnasium: from June 24 (Monday) to August 31 (Saturday) 2024.
For students in the third grade of the gymnasium: from June 17 (Monday) to August 31 (Saturday) 2024.
The last school day for fourth grade students of the gymnasium: May 31, 2024 (Friday).
Additional days without classes in 2023-2024
In the 2023-2024 school year, Lithuanian children have 8 additional days of rest. Below are their exact dates according to current legislation. On these days, schools are closed, and schoolchildren have a legal non-school day.
November 1, 2023, Wednesday – All Saints’ Day.
November 2, 2023, Thursday – All Souls’ Day.
December 25, 2023, Monday – Christmas Day.
December 26, 2023, Tuesday – the second day of Christmas.
February 16, 2024, Friday – Day of Restoration of the State of Lithuania.
March 11, 2024, Monday – Independence Day of Lithuania.
April 1, 2024, Monday – Easter Monday.
May 1, 2024, Wednesday – Labor Day.
