  • Liberation Day – March 3, 2023.

Liberation Day is also called the “Day of the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman slavery”. It is timed to the events of March 3, 1878. On that day, in San Stefano, Russia and the Ottoman Empire signed an agreement that put an end to the Ottoman yoke, which lasted 482 years (from 1396 to 1878).

  • Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Communism – February 1, 2023;

March

Baba Marta is a character in Bulgarian folklore. Associated with the month of March. The veneration of Baba Martha is rooted in pagan times. It is present in many rituals associated with the onset of spring. On this day Bulgarians adorn themselves with figurines made of white and red thread, which they call “Martenitsa”.

May

  • Day of Culture and Education – May 24, 2023.

  • International Children’s Day – June 1, 2023.

November

  • National Awakeners Day – November 1, 2023.

The Day of Folk Awakeners (revivalists of the national spirit) is celebrated by Bulgarians regardless of their place of residence. The holiday is dedicated to the national cultural and religious identity of the Bulgarians, designed to preserve it.

People’s awakeners include such personalities as St. Ivan Rilski, archbishops Petyr Bogdan and Petyr Parchevich, writers Dobri Chintulov and Ivan Vazov, revolutionaries Rakovski, Levski and Botev. There is no general day off on the Day of People’s Awakeners , but educational institutions are closed.
