Holidays in Monaco 2023 – what you need to know?

Monaco has public holidays and unofficial ones. On public holidays, most Monegasques have a day off, schools are closed. Only representatives of important areas work: the police, doctors, etc.

According to the Public Service of the Princely Government of Monaco, if a holiday falls on a Sunday, the weekday following it is declared a holiday. This applies to the following holidays:

  1. New Year;
  2. Labor Day;
  3. Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos;
  4. All Saints’ Day;
  5. Prince’s Day;
  6. Christmas.

Unofficial holidays are those on which there is no additional day off. Basically, these are religious Catholic holidays. These days are associated with certain traditions. In this publication, we will list all the holidays in Monaco 2023 by month.

January 2023

  • January 1 – New Year (public holiday).
  • January 6 is the Feast of Holy Devotion.
  • January 27 – Saint Devota, Saint Devota’s Day (public holiday).

Who was Saint Devota?

Saint Devota is a revered figure in the Christian faith and patroness of the Principality of Monaco. She was born in Ancient Rome in the 3rd century AD, little is known about her early life. Devota is believed to have devoted herself to spreading Christianity at a time when it was being persecuted and discriminated against under Roman rule. Her unwavering faith led her to convert many people to Christianity, which eventually led to her arrest and subsequent martyrdom.

According to legend, Saint Devota was executed by burning alive, but her body was preserved and did not turn into ashes. Over time, her relics were brought to Corsica by Christians fleeing persecution from North Africa. Saint Devota’s Day celebrations in Monaco include an annual Mass at Saint Devota’s church and a symbolic boat-burning ceremony that commemorates the legend of Saint Devota’s martyrdom.
