How long is the academic year in Bulgarian schools?
Bulgarian schoolchildren study in 12 grades. The duration of the school year depends on the class of the student and is counted in weeks. It is divided into two semesters. The first begins in mid-September and ends in early February. The length of the second may vary. The following are the lengths of the second semester in regular schools:
1-3 grade – 14 weeks;
4-6 grade – 16 weeks*;
7-11 grade – 18 weeks**;
12th grade – 14 weeks.
* Students of sports schools in grades 5 and 6 have two additional weeks for sports (in addition to the main ones).
** Students in vocational schools or students in grades 10-11 of schools with a dual education system have 2 or 4 additional weeks of work experience in June or August.
Autumn holidays 2022: from October 29 to November 1;
Christmas holidays: from December 24, 2022 to January 2, 2023;
Interterm (intersemester) holidays 2023: from 1 to 5 February;
Spring break 2023 (grades 1-11): April 8-17;
Spring Break 2023 (grade 12): from 12 to 17 April.
End of academic year:
1-3 grade – May 31, 2023;
Grades 4-6 of ordinary schools – June 15, 2023;
5th and 6th grade of sports schools – June 30, 2023;
7-11 grade – June 30, 2023;
Grade 12 – May 16, 2023.
Days off work that do not fall on holidays
Schools in Bulgaria are closed not only for holidays, but also for public holidays. Below is a list of holidays when Bulgarian schoolchildren have a day off:
September 22, 2022 – Independence Day of Bulgaria.
March 3, 2023 – Day of Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman slavery.
May 1, 2023 – Labor Day and International Workers’ Solidarity.
May 8 – rescheduled from May 6 (Saturday), day off on St. George’s Day, Day of Courage and the Bulgarian Army.
May 24 – Day of Bulgarian education and culture and Slavic writing.
In addition to official holidays, schoolchildren in Bulgaria do not have classes when they take exams. Dates of such days for the 2022-2023 academic year:
May 19, 2023 – State exam in Bulgarian language and literature;
May 23, 2023 – Second State Examination and Vocational Qualification Examination;
May 25, 2023 – No classes, educational and cultural events are held;
June 13, 2023 – Exam in Bulgarian language and literature for national external assessment in grades 7 and 10;
June 19, 2023 – Mathematics exam for national external assessment in grades 7 and 10.
