Why are there no general vacation dates for schoolchildren in Spain?
The school education system is controlled at two levels – state and regional. This is enshrined in the law on education 2/2006 and the amendments to law 3/2020. They are designed to provide:
Protection of the rights and interests of children.
Gender equality.
Continuous development and improvement of schools.
Development of digital competencies.
Individualization of learning.
The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training regulates the main elements of the education system. It also implements the policy of the state in relation to it. We can say that the Ministry sets the general direction.
Each region of Spain has departments of education. They set dates for school holidays, non-school days, etc. To do this, regional authorities develop regulations that are in force on their territory.
In Spain, the climate is very different. This is the main point that the regional departments of education take into account when drawing up the schedule of the school year. Therefore, the start and end dates of the Spanish school holidays 2023-2024 may vary significantly.
How many children study in schools in Spain?
In Spain, education is compulsory from 6 to 16 years of age. In elementary school (up to 12 years old) students have 25 teaching hours per week. In high school and undergraduate studies, there may be 30 to 33 teaching hours per week. During the school year, children in Spain must complete at least 175 school days.
Students study five days a week, Monday through Friday. Classes can start at different times, but usually between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. As a rule, lessons end at 15-17 hours. Many schools have a lunch break. Often it lasts 2-3 hours. some schools provide students with lunches.
School holidays in Spain 2023-2024
Spain consists of 19 administrative-territorial units, 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities. Each of them has its own schedule of the school year. In some cases, municipal authorities may change the start and end dates of school holidays. Sometimes, individual educational institutions have such a right.
There are three types of schools in the Spanish education system:
Primary school (compulsory primary education, ages 6-12).
Secondary school (compulsory secondary education, ages 12-16).
Bachelor’s degree (bachilerato, 16-18 years old).
In some Autonomous Communities, school holiday dates are the same for any kind of education. In others, they differ by several days. In addition, schools may choose to add days off during White Week, February 8-20, 2024.
In addition to school holidays, Spanish children take a break from school on public and some local holidays. They may also have additional days off – “bridges”. In this publication we will give their exact dates.
