When do children in the Netherlands get a break from school?

It is impossible to say exactly when school holidays begin and end in the Netherlands. The fact is that the entire country is divided into three regions: the Northern, Central and Southern regions. But there is one general rule – schoolchildren in the Netherlands have five holiday periods during the 2025-2026 school year:

3. Christmas holidays.
4. Spring break.
5. May holidays.

Officially, public holidays are not days off. But schools adhere to certain rules. In addition to school holidays in 2025-2026, children in the Netherlands will have the following public holidays:

1. Easter Monday.
2. Liberation Day.
3. Ascension of Christ.
4. Monday of Pentecost.

IMPORTANT! Pentecost Monday may be a school day at your school. The decision on the status of this date is made by the administration of the educational institution. Check this information with your school or on its official website.

Exceptions to the Rules

The 2025-2026 school calendar in the Netherlands can be adjusted to the needs of the students. Each individual school decides on this. For example, additional days off can be introduced for religious holidays such as: Eid al-Fitr (20 March 2026), Good Friday (3 April 2026), etc.

In the southern region, many schools introduce additional carnival holidays. However, the total number of school days or hours must remain within the norm. Dutch schools publish the dates of the 2025-2026 school holidays in advance. As a rule, this happens in the first half of 2025.

IMPORTANT! If the school introduces an additional day off for a religious holiday, it will notify about it in advance. In addition, the exemption from classes applies to all students, regardless of their religious views.
