U.S. Federal holidays are set forth in Title V, U.S. Code § 6103. On these dates, non-essential government offices are closed, but their employees are paid. Other government agencies may also be closed, but this is not a mandatory requirement.

State holidays are set by local authorities. Most state government offices and banks are closed these days. Their employees have an official day off with no pay.

State unofficial holidays are set by individual state authorities. These dates are not established by law as holidays or non-working days. Various events, celebrations, religious and memorial services may be held on state holidays.

Unofficial holidays can be classified as traditional holidays. They are not established by law, their dates are not officially recorded. Despite this, local authorities may organize events dedicated to unofficial holidays. For government offices, banks and most private companies, this is a normal working day.

Religious holidays in the United States (except Christmas) are not regulated at the federal level. State governments may designate a religious holiday as a state holiday. Most religious holidays are unofficial and not legally established. Although some private companies comply with them. For example, many banks, shopping centers and malls are closed on Easter.
