Possible changes

In 2024, the May school holidays last one week, from April 27 to May 5. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science makes it possible to extend them. If the Dutch school decides to extend the May holidays, then one week will be added from 4 to 12 May 2024. This is stated on the website of the Central Government of the Netherlands. Check with the school you are interested in or on the school website for how long students will rest on holidays.

School holidays in the Netherlands 2023-2024

The territory of the country is conditionally divided into three regions: Northern, Central and Southern. Each of them has its own schedule of the school year. Which provinces and municipalities are included in each region, you can see further in the article. Below we provide the lists of school holidays for children in the Netherlands for 2023-2024.

Region North

• Summer holidays 2023 – from July 22 to September 3, 2023.
• Autumn holidays – from October 21 to October 29, 2023.
• Christmas holidays – from December 23, 2023 to January 7, 2024.
• Spring break – from February 17 to February 25, 2024.
• May holidays (May holidays) – from April 27 to May 5, 2024.
• Summer holidays 2024 – from July 20 to September 1, 2024.

Central region

• Summer holidays 2023 – from July 8 to August 20, 2024.
• Autumn holidays – from October 14 to October 22, 2023.
• Christmas holidays – from December 23, 2023 to January 7, 2024.
• Spring break – from February 17 to February 25, 2024.
• May holidays (May holidays) – from April 27 to May 5, 2024.
• Summer holidays 2024 – from July 13 to August 25, 2024.

Region South

• Summer holidays 2023 – from July 15 to August 27, 2024.
• Autumn holidays – from October 14 to October 22, 2023.
• Christmas holidays – from December 23, 2023 to January 7, 2024.

Additional days off

In the Netherlands, schools are closed on public holidays. There are a total of 11 public holidays per year, but most of them fall on school holidays or Sundays. Dutch schoolchildren will have four extra days of rest in the 2023-2024 academic year:

• March 29, 2024 – Good Friday.
• April 1, 2024 – Easter Monday.
• May 9, 2024 – Ascension.
• May 20, 2024 – Trinity Monday.
