Conventionally, we divided all Portuguese holidays in 2024 into three groups:
Public holidays.
Regional holidays.
Unofficial holidays.
There are 14 public holidays in Portugal. 13 of them are mandatory, and one (Carnival Tuesday) is optional. On these days, those institutions that are usually closed on Sundays (schools, universities, government agencies, banks, etc.) are usually closed.
Regional holidays (municipal holidays) are celebrated at the municipal level. Each of the 308 municipalities has the right to establish one local holiday. On these days, employees have the right to vacation if this is specified in the employment contract.
Typically, municipal holidays are dedicated to a local patron saint or significant date (for example: the elevation of a village to city status, the day the municipality was created, the anniversary of a battle, etc.). Unofficial holidays are not fixed by law. These may be international, religious or traditional holidays. An employee may receive the right to be released from work on an unofficial holiday only if this is specified in the employment contract. As a rule, this applies to representatives of religions such as Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism.
